I feel like election fever us building in a lot of countries, which means lots of intense short term contract work for creative professionals. As someone with some experience, I wanted to share the lessons I learned when I edited all of the English language TV ads for Canada's Federal Liberals in 2021. I'd done lots of TV ads, but this was a new level of intense. These are the things I learnt over 6 weeks that summer: -If you can work off a laptop, do it. It allowed me to not sleep on the floor of my office and be with my kids while still being on top of everything. -Expect lots of rapid feedback, conference calls and last minute changes. Any hours. Your social life may change. -Constantly remind the client that they need to factor in the Ad approval. Lots of people think TV works like Youtube. -Get a good stock footage subscription, it allowed so much creative flexibility and filled holes. -The content will start positive and inspirational, but slowly develop into attact ads. The last week with be the most intense. -Lastly, PACE YOURSELF, LOOK AFTER YOURSELF. Do yoga, run, whatever, it'll be a busy few weeks so self care will see you through. I look back with pride for the volume, reach and quality of work I achieved in 6 weeks. Ironically, as a permanent resident of Canada, I cant vote! Sample included! #content #campaign #advertising

⚠️ Employment Scam Warning ⚠️ APPLIER BEWARE! This is a heads-up for anyone applying to remote jobs. I’m embarrassed to admit I recently fell for a job scam on LinkedIn after applying for a remote graphic design position at Trend Hunter in Toronto. I checked out the company’s website and socials after being selected for an online interview, everything seemed legitimate. Over a two-week period, I completed both an online questionnaire and phone interview, eventually resulting in an offer. I was thrilled. I was instructed to sign the contract ASAP as the company wanted someone in place quickly. After signing and a brief congratulations, I was instructed to contact IT to set up my home office. The IT ‘clown shoe’ actually welcomed me aboard the Trend Hunter team. Enter the red flags 🚩: I was instructed to deposit a pre-approved check for $1,995.66. I was then supposed to forward the deposit confirmation, so I could then purchase the office equipment directly from my account. I’m not sure how the scam would have played out, as I broke off all communication at that point. I went back over the emails and realized I was getting played. The email address was spelled “trendshunter” with an extra ‘s’, and the contract was poorly designed, and in hindsight, the phone interview was also a joke. Enthusiasm clouded my judgment. It could have been worse, imagine someone quits their current job based on securing a dream contract—only to be suddenly out of work and down two thousand dollars. Employment platforms need to do better at screening these fraudulent postings. It's no secret we're in a challenging job market right now, especially for creatives 🎨 ✍ 🎵 You can have a great interview but not get a job offer, for many reasons that have nothing to do with you: - Another candidate had the exact thing the company needed - The position was canceled - They went with an internal candidate - The hiring manager changed what they were looking for mid-way This can all be really discouraging 😞 But we can't give up 💪 A challenging job market means it's even more important to put your best foot forward to increase your odds of success 🎲 Here are some common mistakes to avoid when interviewing: (I've been guilty of some of these so we're in this together🤝)

Dear, anyone starting out in the Media Industry that thinks being a runner is the only way in. BREAKING NEWS: It's not. I have never once done a runner job and I've had 4 jobs in the Media Industry, I'm now a successful Social Media Account Manager for a long-running Social Media Agency - and I have never been a runner. My partner is another example, no runner jobs and he is a highly skilled videographer for what was once a Premier League football club. Yes, it's a GREAT way to put your foot in the door. A GREAT way to ask questions to the right people. And a GREAT way to get experience. But it is NOT the way it HAS to be. Running is not for me, and as much as my University lecturers told me it was the way to go, I stood my ground. I put my foot in the door by getting experience, and that experience led me to more experience, and more networking. Ask to shadow, ask to spend a day in someone's office, or even just message a few people on LinkedIn for tips and tricks. All of that led me to where I am right now. It doesn't always have to be the way someone else sets the scene for you. You do you, and remember that EVERY SINGLE path is different. Follow your path, not the path others tell you to.

I’ve spoken to a lot of mid-senior level digital media professionals lately. Here’s what I’m hearing. 👇 1. Senior roles are rare. The competition is fierce, and many aren’t even advertised. 2. Referrals are your secret weapon. To secure an interview, a recommendation or a trusted recruiter (who works in partnership with the relevant hiring managers and/or TA team) intro is your best bet. 3. It’s pointless applying for the majority of roles via LinkedIn. I've heard stories of rejections being sent out even through CV’s haven’t been read due to overwhelming volume of applicants. 4. Interview processes are more protracted than they were 18+ months ago – be prepared for several stages and greater involvement from C-suite level than before. 5. Things are slowing as we get deeper into December - but forward-thinking businesses are still conducting interviews with a view to getting the right person secured before people break for the holiday's. One of my favorite TikTok series: The Resume Rewrite I started doing these in 2021, after I thought to myself "What's something everyone struggles with but no one really talks about?" Resume. Bullet. Points. Why are they are so hard to write!!! "Good" writers (usually people born into higher socioeconomic status homes) might have better bullet points than others. But that doesn't mean they're a more qualified candidate, it just means they're a better writer. So, I created the Resume Rewrite series where I took jobs that people requested (call center, hairdresser, fast food worker, etc.) and "rewrote" the bullet points to be more flavorful, quantitative, and specific. When Chat GPT came out, I sort of moonlighted it with the assumption that AI would now fill this role. But, as it turns out, it hasn't! People still love my Resume Rewrite series and are requesting new jobs for me to cover all the time. #ContentCreator #CareerAdvice #Resume

I’m so tired of seeing the “video editor/graphic designer is not” posts, especially when it’s the same copy-pasted content circulating over and over. Most of these seem to come from non-American accounts, and while the sentiment is valid, the repetition feels like noise at this point. Trust me, we get it—it’s hard to take on a role that piles on extra responsibilities with unfair pay. I feel it too. But let me be clear: I’m not going to work for my video editing rate if you expect me to also be your entire marketing team. There’s a huge difference between adding value to a role and being taken advantage of, and I know where I draw the line. Let’s keep having conversations about fair pay and realistic expectations in creative roles, but let’s make sure they’re meaningful, not just echoes of the same thing. #CreativeIndustry #FairPay #RespectCreatives #VideoEditing #GraphicDesign #ProfessionalGrowth

I am a Social Media Manager and my IG has about 1,500 Followers. My TikTok has 176. When you guys see someone working in social media with blank social media accounts, or accounts that haven't been updated since forever… Do not assume it is a reflection of what they can or cannot do. Social Media Manager ≠ Influencer. My main gig is social media, and has been since facebook still would not have let you in without an @*.edu or @*.ac.uk email. My side gig is social media. I chase clients relentlessly, talk with people, and read industry newsletters to stay on top of the game. Sometimes I will get invited to a talk as a panelist, or contribute to a book (Xandrina Allday's "Dear Social Media Manager", with contribution from yours truly, is out on 30th June!). When I am not doing that, the last thing I want to do is talk to a phone mounted on a tripod or a gimbal and facing ME for a change, or shoot things in my life, then edit MORE content, just to flex or make people laugh 🥴 Choosing not build an audience is not the same as being unable to build an audience.
